He's sort of an academic's drug user, but I really appreciate the idea of exploring drugs and substances as a thought-out experiment instead of just 'taking whatever' to have fun. That, or ahem if you live somewhere it's legal, try LSD, since it's still popular today thanks to his (and others') promotional efforts. Obviously, this was a complicated dude, but we're lucky and can read books about him and written by him to explore his experiences. Unfortunately, even though he was introduced to LSD by US government experiments, it was criminalized with other drugs, he ended up spending some time in jail (for marijuana, actually), and he wasn't given a lot of positive press. He was an important member of the Beat Generation during the 50's and one of the Merry Pranksters in the 60's, who went around giving people LSD (their drivers was also in the books 'On the Road'), mentoring the Grateful Dead, and performing pranks, ala 'The Electric Acid Kool Aid Test.' He wrote 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' and some other books. There's already one very famous person who has come forward from these experiments: Ken Kesey.
